I started my career as a Swim Instructor for Houston Swim Club in June 2009. I had recently been laid off from a nonprofit organization I was working for, and I was looking for a new job when my friend suggested I come work for Houston Swim Club. I applied for the job and was hired. I told myself it would just be a temporary thing until I found another job with an administrative position. Boy was I wrong!
I fell in love with working at HSC for many reasons. The first reason being teaching the students! Not everyone gets to have a career teaching children a lifesaving skill! I love watching my students go from screaming and crying because they are scared of the water to comfortable, relaxed, proficient swimmers who are eventually swimming strokes. It is so rewarding! I also love the relationships that I get to create with my students and their families. The family friendly environment makes HSC a great place to be.
I love that we are active in our communities! Over the years, I have helped with many community events in order to help spread the word about water safety and the importance of learning to swim. Our partnerships with Katy Moms Network, Typhoon Texas, and Chick-fil-A Katy are key to our presence in the community. I especially enjoy participating in Halloween Trunk-or-Treat events for local churches and schools. Dressing up and seeing my swimmers outside of the pool is so much fun and something I look forward to every year!
Another reason I fell in love with working for HSC is because of the environment the leadership teams have created. HSC is a family-owned business that aims to make their employees and customers feel like family. In fact, one of our core values is Everyone's Family. I have the opportunity to work with great managers and exceptional leaders who I’ve learned a lot from and that I am still learning from to this day! I love working in a positive environment with flexible work arrangements and for a company that strives to not only have their employees feel valued and supported, but their customers as well.
In January 2015, I was given the opportunity to move into a leadership role myself and became the Pool Manager for our Katy location. This has provided me with new challenges and learning opportunities that my directors have helped guide me through. Now I am able to help, encourage, and guide my instructors at the Katy location to explore new areas of teaching and help them become the best instructors they can be!
At HSC, we love what we do and it shows. I'm extremely proud to work for an organization that is making a difference in the Houston community one swim lesson at a time.
